Access Floor Definition Access floor, also called raised floor, is a type of flooring used in buildings with a high requirement for under-floor servicing, cabling, wiring, electrical supply, HVAC and chilled water pipes. Additional structural support and lighting are often provided under the floor when it is raised high enough for a person to crawl or walk beneath.
This type of flooring consists of a metal grid framework (stringers) and an understructure of adjustable-height legs (pedestals) that provide support for individual floor panels. The panels are usually 24 x 24 inch or 600 x 600 mm in size. The height of the legs is dictated by the volume of cables and other services provided beneath the floor. Typically they are arranged for a clearance of at least 6 inches or 15 cm.
The panels are normally made of a steel shell fabricated with a cementitious internal core. There are a variety of flooring finishes such as carpets, high-pressure laminates, wood, and anti-static finishes for use in computer rooms and laboratories. To remove panels, a tool with a suction cup on the end called a “floor puller,” “tile lifter” or “suction lifter” is used. A hook-and-loop lifter may be used on carpeted panels.
