Most of those who suffer from atopic dermatitis also have other atopic diseases. Like many allergies they run in families and are chronic. Unlike some other diseases, about 75% of those who suffer from it will outgrow it, although half develop it while under the age of 2 years. Those who continue to suffer from it as they get older may find they are misdiagnosed with psoriasis.

There is no way to cure this condition, so atopic dermatitis treatment is focused on management of symptoms to improve the quality of life. Methods include both preventive measures and medical treatment. Preventive measures such as limiting dietary intake of milk, nuts, cheese, tomatoes, wheat, yeast, soy, and corn products can reduce the severity and numbers of outbreaks. As many as a third of sufferers benefit from diets free of cheese, yogurt, alcohol, fish, shellfish, spinach, eggplant, processed meats, benzoate preservatives, and fermented foods. Environmental irritants include dust, dust mites, smoke, dander, and other pollutants. It is also well documented that anger, stress, exhaustion, excessive heat, cold, or temperature swings can all trigger an outbreak.

Medical treatment should begin with a dermatologist approved moisturizer applied to the skin right after 3-5 minute lukewarm baths done 2-3 times a day. In most severe cases petroleum jelly will be recommended. Moisturizers with ceramide in them are known to be good for atopic dermatitis treatment. Additionally the avoidance of soap based cleaners for a cream based one can reduce moisture loss and keep the skin hydrated.

In the case that moisturizers do not work on their own corticosteroid ointment may be prescribed. One should be aware that these creams can cause stretch marks and thinning of the skin. Steroid creams should never be applied to the face or other areas with naturally thin skin without medical supervision. Should there be in infection antibiotics may also be added to the treatment plan.
