One thing that I love about all news windows products may be the remote desktop features. I used PCAnywhere but I find that remote desktop is now almost as good, would like to view a file transfer like PCAnywhere comes with, but remote desktop is free so that is a plus for it.

One of the tasks that I encounter with my network setup is forwarding ports as a result of my router. There are two issues that I recently found when dealing with your RDP forwarding. The first was what is the port number associated with RDP. With a quick look on Google I found that the standard RDP port is actually 3389.

Now you've got the port number you may simply go into ones router and forward which port through and after enabling your remote desktop feature it will work from outside your network truthfulness either know your IP address or have a dynamic dns service like I use. To enable remote desktop in Windows xp and Windows 2003 go to the start menu, find the my pc icon and right press it. Select the properties option in the drop down list and then click on the remote tag in this window that appears. There you'll see the two check boxes, check the second container, and then click on the remote user button. Make certain the users you want access are in the list and then click ok until you have exitted the many windows. RDP is now enabled on the machine.

Which means this simple setup would have worked for my network nevertheless issue then became May possibly several servers that I want access to along using my desktop. Now I could just remote to my desktop and remote to the other machines from there considering they are all on the local network. This would create lots of data that needed to become transferred though, with limited upstream speeds on the broadband connection you don't require this, and will cause performance problems with RDP. So I experienced two options, I could change that registry entry like was stated inside article. I will paste that fix here should that page has an issue at some time:

CAUTIONARY: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause substantial problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee which you could solve problems that derive from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor for your own risk.

You may use the Remote Desktop feature in Windows xp Professional to connect for your computer from another, rural computer. WARNING: The Remote Assistance feature in Or windows 7 may not work properly if you happen to change the listening vent. To change the vent out that Remote Desktop listens with:

Start Registry Publisher (Regedt32. exe).

Locate the following key in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESystemCurrentControlSetControlTerminalServerWinStationsRDP-TcpPortNumber

On the Edit menu, click Modify, click Decimal, type the new port number, and then click OK.
Stop Registry Editor.

TAKE NOTE: When you try to touch base to this computer using the Remote Desktop connection, you must type the new vent.

The other option I had was to look into my router and specify another external port number and point that port on the 3398 on the IP address in the machine I wanted to venture to. I chose this second item as it was less time-consuming and did the trick for me. One appealing thing about to be able to change the port amount of RDP is security. If you leave the standard port number then anyone will know to check on that port to see if you have Remote Desktop enabled together with potentially compromise your network. Let me know if you can find any issues with the registry fix though and if there are I will just remove it from this article. .
