teens texting and driving - Cops have pulled over drivers they thought may be intoxicated to discover the person wasn't drunk, but texting.

Many state laws prohibit reading or sending text messages or emails while driving, except to report an emergency or use a navigation system. Texting drivers are often caught speeding, driving without headlights, making unsafe lane changes, or otherwise watching road signs.

Some state law fines are only USD20 for texting drivers. Many car crashes involve mobile phone use. Texting is especially problematic among teens. An associate at work professor at Eastern Virginia Med school is seeking a grant from the Department of Motor Vehicles to produce a course to prevent teens from texting while driving. Drivers who text are 23 times prone to enter a vehicle wreck according to the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute.

Texting while driving is deadly. In California, a Sonoma State freshman, killed a two-year-old girl, and seriously injured a 42-year-old mother when the freshman, a star volleyball player, texted while driving. The star volleyball player faced trial for around per year in jail.

A teenage driver in North Carolina faced misdemeanor charges after killing her passenger in a vehicle crash. Reports indicated the teen driver, age 16, was texting while driving.

teenagers texting while driving - A Consumer Reports study on mobile device use, including texting while driving, for drivers under age 30, showed:

•30percent texted while driving previously 1 month

•58percent saw a hazardous situation because of distracted driving in the last 30 days

According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, distracted driving killed about 5,000 people and seriously injured most millions of people in 2009. Car wrecks are the leading reason for US teen deaths. Based on Centers for Disease Control, drivers aged 15-24 make-up USD26 billion in car wreck injuries.

teens texting and driving - There might be severe criminal and civil lawsuit consequences because of not following traffic laws. Each time a car accident occurs, the traffic/criminal case up against the potentially at-fault driver goes forward separate from the civil lawsuit or claim against the car driver who caused the crash. The prosecution by law enforcement doesn't actually decide the personal injury case but key facts may be created in the criminal investigation. The damage victim might be requested to testify at the criminal trial as well as the civil case. The defendant could be ordered to pay restitution for the accident victim but it doesn't mean the injured party should not still pursue a civil case to get further damages.
