What you're wanting to do is adding the neighboring information and alter the rhythm with the original melody line. Remember in jazz improvisation there's no one fashion to go about this. jazz education is a simple way to get started. Experiment with various other tunes on jazz CDs. Use your hearing to dictate what notes to utilize. Soon enough you'll find other ways to improvise.
