Honolulu city is on Oahu's southeastern coast but the entire island<br /> is called Honolulu County. The word Honolulu means &quot;protected bay&quot; and as the<br /> name suggests the city developed around a bay. Honolulu is divided into districts<br /> the best known of which is Waikiki there is also the historic site of Pearl Harbor, a<br /> dynamic city, miles of white sandy beaches and not far away from the city center is<br /> lush natural countryside.<br /> <br /> Hawaii was settled by Polynesians from the Marquesas Islands about 1,500<br /> years ago, 500 years ago the Tahiti settlers arrived and Hawaii's unique culture<br /> evolved. Captain Cook brought the white man to the islands in 1791 and in 1810 the<br /> Hawaiian Royal family was formed from a unification of the various tribes on the<br /> islands. The noble royals ruled the islands until 1893 when the American colonists<br /> contrived a coup getting Queen Liliuokalani to abdicate. The Hawaiian culture was<br /> also influenced by the influx of Asian and Portuguese immigrants who came to work<br /> on the sugar and pineapple plantations.
